Massimo Ghioni received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in Nuclear Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano in 1987. Since 1990 he has been with the Department of Electronics and Information at the Politecnico di Milano, where he is currently Full Professor of Electronics. In 1992, he was visiting scientist at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY, where he developed new CMOS compatible SOI photodetectors for optical datacom applications. His current research interests include microelectronic single photon detectors and systems for applications in quantum cryptography, astronomy, molecular biology and diagnostics. He has co-authored over 200 papers in international journals and conferences and holds 7 U.S. patents. In 2004, he co-founded the Micro Photon Devices (MPD), a spin-off company of the Politecnico di Milano specialized in manufacturing photon counting and timing modules. Massimo Ghioni received the AEI (Italian Association of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Award in 1996 and the IEEE Transactions Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Power Engineering Society in 2005.
